The journey, inspiration, and passion behind the stories

R.M. Baril

Growing up, I always had a passion for reading. Books like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings fueled my imagination, sweeping me away on fantastical adventures to new worlds. I used to create my own adventures in my head as a way to pass the time while mowing lawns or swimming laps. But a TV show ultimately spurred my writing career.

You see, I was always fascinated by the power a writer had when they built a story. They were fully in control of every facet of their world–from the characters to the magic systems to the setting–and as a consumer, I was subject to their whims. In most cases, that wasn't a problem. I loved the adventures and the worlds seamlessly woven by their creators. However, it became a problem with a TV series that I followed. Though it started off great, midway through the season, the decisions the characters made began to feel unnatural, and I found myself wishing that I had control of the storyline so the characters would make different choices. Frustrated, I thought, "I can write something better than that–and I think I will!" I turned off the TV mid-episode, went to my computer, and my writing career began that afternoon.

I completed my first novel in college, and that spurred my desire to write for a living. Although I pursued a business degree, I spent the majority of my time writing, editing, and reading. My first novel went unpublished, but I knew I could apply what I had learned to the next one. I wrote several stories and received amazing help along the way, including from an intern at Tor and a literary agent who helped me hone my craft.

Then, in 2018, I published Amped Up. It was an incredible feeling to have people reading the story I had created, and I was excited to complete the series. I continued to work on the sequel, but the pace of my life was increasing exponentially. My family was growing, I had enrolled in an MBA program, and my job was becoming more demanding. Writing is challenging to do when you have another job that takes up a big chunk of your brain space, and I found that out firsthand. My other responsibilities made my writing time scarce. I managed to finish a few drafts, but it was slow going, and I started to wonder if my dream of completing my series was just a dream.

And then in 2024, the company I had been with for over ten years offered a voluntary separation. It was a difficult decision–I had a career path lined up and a long-term plan that it enabled–but you only get to live life once, and I wanted to live mine to the fullest. Writing always felt like my God-given calling in life, and I knew I wasn't willing to leave that work unfinished. As a result, I took a leap of faith and left my job to pursue a career as an author. The result was an incredible increase in my writing capacity.

The path isn't always easy, but it is satisfying, and I'm excited to share my worlds with others. I only hope they find as much enjoyment in them as I do.
